Theory of Operation:
- The LECO SC632 carbon and sulfur determinator is designed to measure the carbon & sulfur content in a wide variety of organic materials including coal, coke, and oils by combustion and non dispersive infrared detection.
- Analysis begins by weighing out a sample into the combustion boat. The sample is placed in the combustion system, which is typically regulated at higher temperature with a pure oxygen environment. All sample material contained in the combustion boat goes through an oxidative reduction process that causes carbon & sulfur bearing compounds to break down.
- The carbon oxidizes to form CO2 and the sulfur forms SO2. The design of the combustion system prevents atmospheric air from entering the sample combustion zone.
- The Carbon IR cell measures the concentration of CO2 gas, while the sulfur IR Cell measures the concentration of SO2 gas.
Analytical Procedure:
Remove any obvious contaminant material from the sample.
Pulverize the sample.
Weigh the sample in the combustion boat.
Add one scoop of accelerator.
Mix thoroughly.
Analyze samples according to the instruction manual.
