Theory of Operation:
Extraction is a process of dissolving the soluble hydrocarbons from the rock sample by repeatedly flushing the sample with an appropriate solvent.
Analytical Procedure:
Obvious contaminants are picked from the sample.
The sample is pulverized and passed through a 40-Mesh sieve.
Weigh the sample.
Place the sample in a thimble.
Weigh a 100ml empty flask and add Dichloromethane.
Place the thimble in the Soxhlet apparatus and open the water tap through the condenser.
The sample is extracted for at least 16 hours.
Once the extraction is complete, evaporate the solvent.
Reweigh the flask to get the extract weight.
The extract is ready for further analysis.
