Instrumentation: Immersed Bulk Volume (IBV)

Theory of Operation:
- Immersed bulk volume (IBV) allows bulk volume of core and specific gravity determination of mercury by using buoyancy law.
- Any object, wholly or partially immersed in a fluid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. The formula below is determined:
W2-W1=?Hg * V bulk
Vbulk= W2 -W1/ ?Hg
Analytical Procedure:
Create an Excel© spreadsheet to make the calculations for the bulk volume from the specific gravity of mercury, mercury temperature and weight of displaced fluid.
Insert the sample data into the Excel© report (sample name, date and time of test, operator, temperature, and weight of the displaced fluid).
Gently lay the sample on to the mercury and start to measure
Input data in the report.
The Excel© report calculates the bulk volume from the specific gravity of mercury, the temperature, and the weight of the displaced fluid.
