X-ray fluorescence bombards a sample with x-rays, in turn inducing it to release x-rays specific to the individual elements that make it up.  These x-rays are analyzed for the presence of nearly forty different elements, which can provide a rapid lithological assessment and detect boundary changes down a well.  XRF analysis can be applied to any kind of rock sample, outcropping, or geological formation and is non-destructive. In addition, the new handheld XRF tool allows x-ray fluorescence analysis to be performed in the field and can even produce rapid data during drilling.
