Production Allocation

Production Allocation Star Plot

A star plot comparing the fingerprints of oils from different intervals of a single well.

In multi-payzone wells, the various intervals will often not be in communication, and thus oil from each interval will have its own distinctive chemical composition.  In the event of a decline in production, it can be difficult to restore productivity without deploying production logging tools necessitating great expense and total shutdown of the well.  A production allocation study performs regular gas chromatography analysis on each productive interval together with the commingled sample, thus establishing the differences in component composition of each oil and determining the extent to which each payzone contributes to production.  If the well begins to experience decreased productivity, further GC analysis of the oil will show by comparison which interval or intervals have begun to decline, making it possible to pinpoint the location of the lessened production without any halting of well activity.
